24th March - Fastnet race 2017
DISCOVER THE EXCITEMENT AND CHALLENGES OF CREWING ON THE FASTNET RACE FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH MARK SANDERSON.
Club members, Tim Fenton, Mark Sanderson and Simon Ruffles sailed in the Fasnet Race last year, 38 years after the disaster of 1979 when 15 people died during the event.
Mark will tell what it was like to take part in this famous race.
A fork supper at £5 per head (members: £6 per head non-members), will be served at 20:00, and the talk starts at 20:30. (Note revised times)
“Most of my yachting experience has been confined to sailing a small yacht on the River Orwell but I’ve been fascinated by the classic ocean races.
The Fastnet is 600+ miles and only comes around every two years. The 2017 Fastnet was my first taste of ocean racing as part of the crew of local yacht J120 Jameerah, skippered by Simon Ruffles.
The campaign is challenging, both tactically and physically and requires effective teamwork and resilience. Every second onboard is focused on sailing performance - without compromise! Finishing the race was a major personal achievement.”
