28th August - Ha'penny cup

Last year's event was a great success and much enjoyed by all (despite the late finish of certain participants!) and it is hoped that this event will become a new fixture for the August bank holiday.

The idea was inspired by the classic film “Ha'penny Breeze” which featured a race from Pin Mill, out round the Cork Sand Lightship and back. Of course the old lightship is no longer there and has been replaced by the Cork Sand Yacht Beacon but, weather permitting, that is the course we will follow. If the weather doesn't co-operate we will run a shortened course into the Stour.

However IT IS NOT A RACE !!! In order to avoid the need for handicaps and all the rules and protests that can be involved in racing, the idea is that skippers will estimate the TIME it will take them in their boat, with their crew, however inexperienced, to complete the course. The start will be a 1/2 hour window and the time you cross the start line will be noted. Your ESTIMATED time for the course will be added to the start time and your theoretical finishing time will be calculated....... The boat that crosses the finish line with the smallest TIME ERROR will be the winner.

It is intended that this should be a low key, fun event that anyone and everyone can enter no matter what kind of boat or crew you have and there will be a BBQ afterwards at the Club.

There will be a briefing in the clubhouse on the evening of Friday 25 th August at 2000, but in case some people can't make that, we will send out a reminder with a few more details around that time. We are hoping for a good turnout on Bank holiday Monday so bring the whole family..... The more the merrier!
