Arthur Ransome commemorative event

Saturday 13 May 2017

As many will be aware, 2017 marks the 80th aniversary of "We didn't mean to go to sea" and the 50th anniversary of the death of Arthur Ransome. Pin Mill featured in this and at least one other of Ransome's books, so along with several other organisations, our Club is planning a number of commemorative events........,

On May 13th, in conjunction with Chelmondiston and Pin Mill Community Council, we will be holding an "Open Day" and New Members Evening. There will be events on the Green and Arthur Ransome's famous boats, Nancy Blackett and Peter Duck, will be moored on the pontoon. Plus a Hog Roast from 18:30.

Two "Sailing events" are proposed. Ransome's book "Secret Water" begins in Pin Mill and was set mainly in Walton Backwaters. Our heroes made their camp on Horsey Island so it is proposed to hold a BBQ on Horsey Island. This will take place on June 11th and will possibly be in company with members of the Walton and Frinton Club and the Old Gaffers Association and should be great fun!

Another of Ransome's books set in Pin Mill was "We Didn't Mean To Go To Sea" in which again, the children start their adventure in Pin Mill and end up in Flushing (Holland)! So there is a proposal for a Club cruise to Flushing, culminating in a meal at a suitable hostelry over there. It would probably take place over a long weekend around June 3rd/4th but there are many variables to consider, not least the fact that having got to the other side, some people will probably want to stay over there and use the event as the start of a longer cruise in Dutch waters. Others may not have that much time and will want to come straight back. This will obviously take some organising and your Sailing Committee don't want to make arrangements, including a booking at a Dutch restaurant, if nobody turns up! So at this stage we are looking for "Expressions of Interest" from members...... If you think there is a good possibility that you might be interested in joining this event please contact Steve Miller or Paul Jefferies
